Librarian Wardrobe

Not always buns and sensible shoes, librarians at various types of libraries have different styles (and dress codes). Check it out here or submit your own.

Surprise! Here is our book cover for The Librarian Stereotype: Deconstructing Perceptions and Presentations of Information Work with ACRL Press.

The cover was designed by Dorothy Gambrell of Cat and Girl and Very Small Array! We are so excited to have Dorothy as our cover artist. She based the design on Bureau of Labor Statistics data about librarians, so it’s an infographic of how librarians are categorized, according to the BLS.

The second image is part of our invitation for our book release party at the 2014 ALA Annual Conference in Las Vegas. We will be having a champagne toast + cupcakes at 9:30pm as part of the After Hours Party. More details will be released as we get closer to #alaac14. Hope you’ll join us!

This is it! Final #ala2013 post. These are all from the EveryLibrary + Librarian Wardrobe After Hours Party! Big thanks to John Chrastka and everyone at EveryLibrary for working with us to make this party a huge success. If you happened to pick up a free LW patch, consider donating some $$ to EL. Patch with a purpose.

Also big thanks to our Emcees and Judges for hosting and werkin it. And thanks to everyone who came! Obviously the parties are no fun without you. Apologies to anyone who waited in line and was unable to make it in. It is very difficult to find a central venue that allows for a large capacity without charging a ton of money (that we don’t have). We have plans to make the party more accessible for #ala2014.

And here we go….

John Chrastka, @mrchrastka: Executive Director, EveryLibrary and your badass cohost for the evening.

Jaime Hammond, @jaimebc: Acting Director of Library Services, Community College, CT; and one of our two glorious Emcees for the night. & Celia Perez, @chibrarian: Community College Librarian, Chicago, IL, and Judge of “Best Accessories.”

JP Porcaro, @makeithappenday: Academic Librarian, NJ. Emcee this year and last (and last year he didn’t even have a microphone, that’s perseverance).

Katie Fortney, @kfortney: Copyright Librarian, Academic Library, CA. & John Jackson, @johnxlibris: Academic Librarian, CA.

Laura Cohen : Library worker/volunteer pre-library school and winner of Best Ensemble! (Thanks, Fancylibrarian, for providing missing info!)

Valerie Kae Taylor-Carroll: Winner of Best Accessorizing + ultimate winner of all time for winning the Walkoff! Sash and bragging rights right here.(Thanks again to Lauren Comito for making these sashes!).

Least Librarianish: Audrey Evans (Judge = Patrick Sweeney)

Best Shoes: Sarah Houghton (Judge = Courtney Young)

Best Ensemble: Laura Cohen (Judge = Daniel Ransom)

Best Accessorizing and winner of Walkoff: Valerie Kae Taylor-Carroll (Judge = Celia Perez)

Congrats!

And see you next year.

P.S. Check out who our photographers were here

Looks like this “last” post will have to be a two-parter due to large files and/or internet can’t handle hot librarian parties.

These photos are all from the Que(e)ry Party, last 3 from the Librarian Realness Contest:

Big Dipper & Hank Tina-Tram: Performers, photos 1 and 2

Jessica Speer: Research Specialist, Academic Library and Volunteer, Read/Write Library, Chicago, IL, “shelving”
Huck Poe: Writer, Chicago, IL, “shelving”
Winner: Our photographer did not catch this lovely lady’s name who won. Those in the know, or lucky winner herself, get at us with the info so we can update.

#ala2013 LW+EL After Hours Party!

This is like the cronut of library events (that means best of everything, if you’re not up on new desserts), so you probably want to keep reading…

Join EveryLibrary and Librarian Wardrobe on Saturday, 6/29 at 9:30pm for fun, drinks, and a best-dressed/walkoff contest. Kind of like the one in Anaheim, but Warren G probably won’t be there, nor is there likely to be a fistfight.

We have 2 emcees and 5 judges to make it a dreamy night. Your judges are 2012 and 2013 LW V-Day Crushes, and your emcees are totally magical in their own right. Don’t miss this!

Take note and dress to impress. We will be bestowing winners of best-dressed and the walkoff with little tokens of our appreciation… and of course, bragging rights last forever.

*Emcees (it’s a package deal)

(L) JP Porcaro (1985-2014) works at an academic library in New Jersey, despite never having read any books. He is an instigator in the best sense of the term, getting people together to form ALA Think Tank and countless other innovative, creative and fun library-inspired projects. Most importantly, he has a big mouth and an even bigger heart.

(R) Jaime Hammond is the Acting Director of Library Services at a community college in Connecticut, which required her to get a new wardrobe, regardless of what anyone else says. She imagines that she would enjoy lots of hobbies but she has kids instead. She can be found on twitter as @jaimebc but is far funnier on facebook. She has every intention of joining the Peace Corps on her fiftieth birthday.

*Judge: Trevor Dawes

Judging category: Best Hair

Trevor A. Dawes is an Associate University Librarian at Washington University in St. Louis and an instructor in the MSLIS program at the iSchool at Drexel University.  Dawes earned his MLS from Rutgers University, and has two additional Master’s Degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.  He is an active member of the American Library Association and is currently Vice-President/President-Elect of the Association of College and Research Libraries

*Judge: Patrick Sweeney

Judging category: Least Librarianish
(H/T to Caris O’Malley for creating this category last year)

Patrick is the branch manager of the East Palo Alto Library in the San Mateo County Library System where he gets to do fun projects like start guitar, seed, and Nook lending libraries. He lives on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay that he use for the library advocacy project called the Story Sailboat. When not not doing library projects, he’s reading, writing, playing guitar, or having drinks with his friends at the local dive bars.

*Judge: Courtney Young

Judging category: Best Shoes

Courtney L. Young is currently Head Librarian and Associate Professor of Women’s Studies and Penn State Greater Allegheny. She is an active leader in the American Library Association (ALA) — **and now elected to ALA President!** — serving on the ALA Executive Board (2009-2012) and as a past President of the New Members Round Table (2009-2010). In 2011, Courtney was named a Library Journal “Mover& Shaker”, recognized as a Change Agent for her ability to successfully make connections among a diversity of duties in her library, on campus, and in the profession. She frequently presents and publishes on issues related to academic librarianship, diversity, virtual reference, and professional development.

*Judge: Daniel Ransom

Judging category: Best Ensemble

Daniel Ransom lives in San Francisco and works in Oakland as an academic librarian at a small liberal arts university, with responsibilities in reference, instruction, and electronic resource management. When he’s not working with his students, he’s either at home working with his kids or out on a bike. He can be found online on twitter and tumblr as @ThePinakes (named for the catalog of the Great Library of Alexandria; he has a pet obsession with library history, especially the ancient variety).

*Judge: Celia C. Perez

Judging category: Best Accessorizing

Celia C. Perez is a community college librarian / department chairperson in Chicago. She writes about Latinos in children’s and YA books on her blog All Brown All Around (http://all-brown-all-around.blogspot.com) and is beyond the moon to be serving on the 2014 Pura Belpré Award committee. In addition to being a librarian and a mom, she makes zines, works on her novel, crosses things off her list (http://100things2013.blogspot.com), and photographs unattractive boots. She has a big bookish crush on Sherman Alexie.

See you there! <3
